Biography

Dr. Brown was born and raised on a beef cattle farm in Huntington, WV. He attended CentreCollege and The Ohio State University for his undergraduate studies. He obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Purdue University in 2001. Dr. Brown practiced as an associate veterinarian at Animal Care Clinic in Huntington until 2007. In 2007, he founded Brown Veterinary Service, a mixed animal veterinary hospital located in Wayne, WV. In August 2015, Dr. Brown sold his practice to accept a position as a full time faculty veterinarian at Mountwest Community College’s veterinary technology program. Dr. Brown has two teenage daughters, Marin and Mckenna, and his interests include running and exercising, riding his Harley Davidson, and growing his ecommerce businesses.

Goodafternoon Like to ask a question my horse has mudfever we treated him with mud salve. In our vacation we receive a message that our horse was standing on the stable door and was kicking he lost his balance and fall on his back. the next day he was standing on the top of his hoof and was walking in a severe crippled manor ,his leg is swollen see picture according to the.vet this is just the mudfever but I have my doubts is this really only the mudfever or also a result of the fall?

Hello there and thank you very much for your question. Mud fever, as you may or may not know, is simply a skin infection caused by a moist environment. Generally speaking, horses do not show signs of lameness or the symptoms that you are seeing based on this disease only. In fact it would be very rare. Therefore, I strongly believe that there is another reason that may be causing the lameness and swelling issues that you are experiencing. I urge you to have the veterinarian perform a complete orthopedic examination as well as neurologic examination that includes diagnostic nerve testing as well as x-rays so that they can make a diagnosis. Again, I am quite skeptical that the mud fever is the reason for the symptoms your horse is experiencing. Everything is possible but in this case it would be very rare. My cat is 16 years old. He’s had some weight loss, but has a good appetite and is playful. In May ‘18, at his annual exam, the doctor did blood work. Results came back with elevated liver enzymes. The ALT was 344 and ALK Phosphatase was 121. 3 days later we had an ultrasound of his liver and other organs. Everything looked good, so we put him on Denamarin. 10 weeks later we rechecked his levels again. His numbers comtinued to increase from 344 to 399 and from 121 to 164. Any suggestions?

Because the liver enzymes are increasing, even with liver protectant medications on board, I now believe it is time to perhaps consider a liver biopsy. It is possible that when the original ultrasound was performed, there was a liver specific disease that was not detectable on the ultrasound. So at the very least, I would repeat the ultrasound, as well as try to get a liver biopsy. Make certain that your general practitioner feels confident with this procedure. My puppy vomits 1-2 times a week and I can't figure out why! Sometimes it is yellow and sometimes it is clear. (With or without foam) Should I talk to the vet? Is this serious?

Hello and thank you very much for your question. Vomiting 1 to 2 times a week for a puppy is abnormal and therefore you should schedule an appointment with the veterinarian as soon as possible. Some of the reasons that your puppy may be experiencing this our food allergies, congenital or hereditary disease, etc. Your veterinarian will be able to perform a full physical examination as well as diagnostic testing such as blood work, fecal analysis, x-rays, and many other tests. My 5yo gsd had her first dental cleaning last week, they also took xrays of her back legs at the same time. Since then, she lays on her bed most of the day, and hasn't eaten any of her food. I have gotten her to eat some chicken and rice, but thats it. She does drink watet. And she is not vomiting, stool is loose, the little bit she does have, but wouldn't xall it diarrhea. Should I bring her back to the vet.

Because a dental cleaning was performed, I would have the veterinarian pay particular attention to the teeth and make certain that there aren’t any problems post cleaning. In addition, I would also have the veterinarian possibly run a blood CBC chemistry profile just to make certain that all of the internal organs are functioning correctly. My cow eats iron. It always looks for iron and only iron. What's the problem? :(

hello and thank you very much for your question. Unfortunately, I cannot give you a good answer as to why your cow seeks out iron. Maybe it’s because they are deficient, they like the taste of it, or something else completely different. My best advice is to have a local veterinarian or agricultural extension agent come to your farm and perform a soil and hay analysis. this analysis will tell you whether the food you were feeding in the ground or in the hell he has sufficient minerals and vitamins so that you do not have to supplement.
