Biography

Hello! My name is Sabi. I am a Veterinary Nurse (Tech) with over 15 years of experience. I specialize in Emergency Medicine, Specialty Surgery (orthopedic and soft tissue and well as ophthalmology). I also specialize in Feline care, dental care and exotics. I currently own and operate an Equine facility where I train horses and give therapeutic lessons. Please feel free to consult me with any questions! I love talking to owners one on one! I am the happy pet mom of one wonderful dogs, Betty Sue the Boxer. Auri (Or Baby Kitten as we call him) Favi, DamnDaniel the Barn Cat and a herd of misfit horses! (FreedomFries, LeftTwix, Gretta, Wrangler, Lil' Sebastian, Oakley, Gizmo, and Donkey-Jote make up the crazy horse herd here at Freedom Farms!) And how can I forget my two longhorn cows! MaeMae and SueEllen! Yes, I know.... I am crazy! (Pictures coming soon!) Sadly we just lost our husky Loki, and our Great Dane in the last couple of years. I have also recently lost my 18 and 19 year old cats Gus and Booger. (All pictured below) It's never easy to lose a pet, but having babies for that long is an incredible loss. Part of my passion in veterinary medicine is helping Pet Parents deal with loss and bereavement. For many of us, Pets are our family. If this is something I can help you with, I would love to be there for you in your time of need. Working with animals has been the passion of my life. I have tried to do other things, but I always come back to my one true love! I love helping people and am thrilled to be a part of the Petcoach team. I've worked in several day practices where I've specialized in surgery and emergency medicine. I've also managed veterinary practices, so you can be sure that with me, you are in the best hands! I know that my pets are my family and I will treat your pets the same way. I started school in Colorado and studied Biology and then I moved to Texas in 2002. I live in Austin Texas, the music capital of the world. I grew up in Colorado on a cattle ranch and since I can remember I've always wanted to work with animals! My puppy had parvo virus. If I bring a fully vaccinated dog here, can it infect the new dog? Is there still a risk?

If they new dog is a year old and you are completely sure that that it is 100 percent vaccinated there is a very minimal risk that it will be infected. However, that being said, vaccines are never 100 percent effective so there is always a 0.09 percent chance that the new dog could get the virus. But you should be safe bringing the new dog home. I would make sure that the home environment has been cleaned as thoroughly as possible (this means with bleach to all surfaces) and make sure that the outdoor surfaces have been cleaned as well. Parvo can live in the environment for an annoyingly long time (up to 6 months) so it wouldn't hurt to apply a safe mixture of bleach product to your yard as well. This is probably going completely overboard, but you know how scary parvo can be!

We have very recently acquire an 8 Meth smooth border collie. His snout is pink towards and around his nose where there is little hair, which is white. Is this something to be concerned about?

Hello and thank you for your question. It is normal for dogs with white fur, especially around the nose to have pinkish skin. Sometimes their noses will be black, or black and pink, and once you start to be able to see the regular (non-nose) skin on the edges it will be pink. One thing you want to watch out for in dogs with visible skin in this area (or pink nose skin) is sunburn. Limit time in the direct sun if possible Congrats on your new family member!

Hi. This is Pikachu, my friends turtle. He went to a vacation and gave Pika to me to look after. It's my first experience with turtles and I'm little concerned about Pika's shell's color. I researched a little and got worried. I live in Azerbaijan and I'm not familiar with vets here. Plus because of the quarantine i can't go and search one. He told me to feed her with gammarus once a day. I hope somebody will help me. Thank u

Hello! What a cute turtle! You are a lucky pet sitter! I'm not certain if you were referring to the top shell (the yellow color or the green color) or the bottom shell... So I will ease your fears and just say that Pikachu looks very normal. The green stuff on the top shell appears to be algae. Not a big deal unless the tank water is completely green. Hello. Thank you for your question. I know this must be very scary for you. Generally seeing black stool is a sign that there is blood in the feces. When it is black in color, that means that the blood has been "digested" or is coming from somewhere internally. This is something very serious and you are already seeing some of the issues that will arise. Your cat is probably weak because there is a significant amount of blood being lost. If at all possible you need to take her to a vet ASAP. There are many places that are open on a limited basis or emergency clinics and even vets who will travel to your home. Hi, I adopted Edie a few days ago from a rescue. They got her from a small shelter down in south Texas. The shelter tested her for heartworms on 12/27/19 and she was negative. I took her to the vet today and she tested positive. The vet said the test from the shelter must have been a false negative. Is that something that happens often? And should I get a third test done to break the tie? Thank you in advance for your help.

hello and thank you for your question. It is possible but very unlikly that the shelter test was a "false negative". Heartworms can take up to 6 months to mature. It is hte mature worms that breed, have babies, which spread to the bloodstream and cause an immune reponse. It is this immune response (antibodies in the bloodstream) that make a test show up positive. So your dog was already infected but not shoing a positive result yet. There was not really a mistake by the shelter, just timing. Definitely contact the shelter with the results and they may help with treatment costs. I hope your new pup feels better soon!
