Biography

Dr. Gancz received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2001 and his Masters of Science in 2002 from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 2005 Dr. Gancz graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in Ontario, Canada, specializing in avian and exotic animal medicine. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and of the European College of Zoological medicine in avian medicine and surgery. From 2005-2008 he served as the service chief of avian and exotic pet medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.He currently owns the Exotic Clinic, a 100% avian and small exotics practice in Tel-Aviv, Israel. Ask Dr. Gancz about birds, small mammals (rabbits, rodents, ferrets, sugar gliders etc.), and reptiles.

Found this bald spot next to my rabbits eye, just worried about what it could be...

Hi and thank you for your question, Unfortunately it is not possible to make a diagnosis based only on the pics. This skin lesion could be caused by a number of things (e.g. fungal, bacterial or parasitic infection), it could also just be a result of an old injury with a scab that was not noticeable until it came off. I recommend that you have Bambi checked by a vet, as some lab tests may be required. Regards

Hi and thank you for your question, There is no reason why he shouldn't have a long life in India as long as you provide him with the correct husbandry. There are many websites that have care sheets about cockatiels. I recommend that you read about it and try to give him the best possible living conditions. Regards

Hi I have been overfeeding my 12 week cockatiel a lot since I got him when he was 5 weeks. I overfed because he always had very good appetite and can take a lot of formula. However I'm still worried about his crop position. Dies it look overly stretched from the picture? (FYI, He is now 94 gram, compared to 80 gram when I got him. I just cut off all his formula today since he is old enough and worried about a potential crop problem developing.)

Hi and thank you for your question, The crop does look distended, especially if this is not right after a feeding. I don't recommend stopping the formula at once regardless of his age. You should reduce it gradually and only stop it once he is getting very little (5-10ml once daily) and is eating well on his own. Hopefully the crop will come down to a more normal size. Regards
