Does my bearded dragon look overweight? I'm planning on taking him to the vet soon for a checkup but just wanted to know now. Also, is there anyway you can tell his age other than size. He's almost 81/2 in so I guesstimated around 3 months. Does this seem accurate? Anyways, thank you for the help!

It appears based on the picture that clyde is at a good weight currently. He does appear to be on the young side like 3-5 months old. I would recommend following up with a vet like you plan to . This will help review his basic husbandry needs. proper light and diet are very important in maintain Cyldes health.

Romeo has been on GI Wet Food Low Fat by Royal Canine. Since being on this food, hes only pooping once a day. He normally poops twice a day prior. He is fine otherwise. Is this normal? Thank you

My Mini Schnauzer Cooper has started scratchong excessively a few weeks ago. Hes always scratched a bit but never like this. Hos neck is raw. Ive tried some moisterizing lotion for dogs thinking it was dry skin. He doesnt have fleas. His diet is stable so i dont think its an allergy. Ive tried to redirect him but tonight he snuck off and ended up doing this. Ill be calling the vet tomorrow but it can take a week to get in there. What can i do in the interim?

Poor Cooper! It sounds like you're already on the right track for ruling out issues, however, environmental allergens can also flare up this time of year which may be causing the excessive itchiness. Since that area is very badly irritated and inflamed, I definitely agree with getting into your vet ASAP. Since it's right on his neck, you can try inverting an Elizabethan (cone) collar so that the cone part covers the irritation and the neck park sits up closer around his ears, so that it doesn't rub against the irritated spot and protects it from further scratching. Keeping the area clean and dry can also help reduce any secondary infections that may take hold in the irritated skin. An over the counter allergy medication such as Benadryl can also help by reducing any irritation/itchiness, and may also have the added benefit of making him a little drowsy so he's less likely to scratch. However, getting into the vet like you planned is the best course of action. If there is a big wound opening up, it gets worse, it oozes debris, or Cooper seems in major distress, getting into your vet sooner or reaching out to an urgent care vet may be a good idea.

I have a very senior cat (19), who is in Stage 3 kidney disease. She also takes a thyroid pill. She has never been willing to eat a prescriptive diet, she loves regular canned food, but in her old age won't eat the same flavor two times in a row. She's doing well with poo, pee, engaging with us, grooming - she enjoys life. What can I do to help her gain some weight. She only weighs about 8.5 lbs now. As she has aged she has continued to drop weight.

Weight loss is very difficult to manage in a cat with advanced kidney disease especially if the cat will not eat the prescription diet. The weight loss is typically muscle wasting. The prescription diets are restrictive in phosphorus which is essential in keeping kidney damage to a minimum. These diets also have a reduced sodium content to prevent dehydration, are high in specific amino acids to promote muscle mass and contain other ingredients, like omega-3 fatty acids, that support kidney health. Being picky about the diet is common as they are often nauseous due to toxin build up in their blood from the kidneys not filtering properly. You should talk to your vet about using Cerenia or Zofran for this issue to see if it helps. She may also need an appetite stimulant drug either mirtazapine or Entyce. Please talk to your vet about these. The only way for her to gain weight is to eat better. I don't know if you are aware but there are many companies that make prescription kidney diets. If she won't eat one brand she may eat one of the others. I suggest you try different ones. If purchased from your vet, if your cat does not eat it, the pet food company will typically take the food back and refund your money so you are not out the money of trying the food. In my experience, cats tend to like the Royal Canin kidney prescription diets the best but Hill's, Purina and Blue Buffalo also have them. You can try this supplement to help her eliminate phosphorus absorption from her GI tract to help alleviate the strain on the kidneys especially if she will not eat the prescription diet. This would be an adjunct will is not specific for weight gain. Again, the only way to get her gain weight is to get her to eat more (manage nausea and give an appetite stimulant). My cat's fur started to separate. Sometimes on the head/neck it forms like mono tufts, that come off as a group of fine soft undercoat fur. What could it be? She is 13yrs old, neutered Scottish Fold. She takes small dose of Meloxicam (lifetime prescription due to her breeds spine troubles). She had struvite crystals & double mastectomy (4yrs ago) since then she is on a special Veterinary diet "Feline Satiety Weight Management with S/O index" by Royal Canin.

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. From the photo there does not appear to be any bald spots, however, it is not a very close up view. Honestly, unless there are bald spots and/or she is scratching the area I would not be too concerned. If the problem persists though (like for a few months) then you should take her to your vet for an exam. Some reasons there could be changes in the hair coat: 1. Diet - the special diet she is eating may be causing some nutrient imbalance. You should talk to your vet about putting her on a supplement for her coat (like fish oils) as this may help. 2. Skin Allergies - even if she has never had any symptoms of allergies before, they can develop over time. If this was the case though, I would expect hair loss and/or scratching, redness of the skin, etc. If you are not seeing any of that then this is not as likely to be the problem. 3. Fleas - again, I would expect hair loss and scratching. If you are not noticing that, then this is also not very likely to be the problem. 4. Stress - even if you don't think your cat is stressed, she could be. Try to see if you could think of anything that could be causing stress like visiting family, stray cats hanging around outside, you got a new pet, new furniture, etc.... 5. Thyroid disease- either a low or high thyroid can cause problems with the hair coat. Your vet can do a blood test to check for this. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My 14 y/o cat has beginning kidney trouble. Labs two months ago show these are up a little: SDMA enzyme, creatinine, and albumin. A little low on specific gravity. The vet said just monitor his symptoms (increase in urine volume and thirst). I want to know if YOU think he should be on a prescription diet, and if so, do I need a prescription from a vet?

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. Great question. Typically yes, I would put a cat with any renal changes on blood/urine testing on a prescription diet. If the values are not up very high, there are early renal disease diets that would be good to use. Be sure to get his blood/urine checked every 8-12 months and if the renal values get worse he may need to go on a more advanced renal diet. These foods are prescription only. They are fairly expensive diets. There are many companies that make these prescription diets. I like Royal Canin and they are typically my first choice.
