How can I differ brumation and dehydration with my bearded dragon?

Symptoms of both can include lethargy and decreased or lost appetite. Telltale symptoms of dehydration are sunken eyes and wrinkled skin. If you pinch up some loose skin, it will remain in a tent. Captive beardies, as well as young ones, do not "need" to brumate since temperatures are constant and food is readily available year round. If Gibbler is dehydrated, you can soak her daily for 20 minutes in a warm 50/50 solution of water and unflavored PediaLyte. If her condition does not improve, have her examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles.

Romeo was sick on Friday night and Saturday with vomiting so he did not feel like eating or drinking much during the time. He ate his fist meal and drank some water at 5 am this morning. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Romeo and for providing a picture, it's helpful. I'm sorry that he's been sick. If he's been vomiting and not drinking much, yes it is possible that he's a bit dehydrated. His urine in the picture does look a bit yellow, but if he is now drinking water and feel better, I expect he will become hydrated again in due course. It's fine to increase his water intake, and you could add some gently warmed, low sodium chicken broth to his food to help with increasing his fluid intake. I hope this helps.

My dog ate about a few chicken bones. Next day morning poo was fine.During the evening walk he struggled and was constipated and he kept trying and trying he got weak and dehydrated.took him to the vet. They cleared the blockage inside his large Intestine by doing an enema. Got back home yesterday and when he pooped in the morning it was a brown soft poo with little blood. Evening poo brown and gravy no blood. Then today morning brown poo and second time tried only liquid blood drops. Pls advis

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. I'm sorry that Ollies is having this problem. Ingesting bones is a very serious issue.... It is likely that the bones are scraping the lining of the large colon which is why you are seeing drops of blood. I don't think that performing an enema would assist in removing any of the bones. There may have been an impaction of stool that they cleared but I highly doubt any bones actually came out. Bones either have to be surgically removed or passed out through regular defecation. Were any x-rays taken to see where the bones were in the GI tract and how many? If not, I suggest you have that done so you know if you have to be worried about any bone remnants or not. This can be extremely serious as any sharp points on the bones could puncture the intestinal lining causing serious peritonitis and possibly death. If he is otherwise acting normally, don't be overly concerned about the blood drops. If he is eating OK I would feed him a couple slices of bread every 8-12 hours to help coat any bone fragments and help push them out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. The damage to the plastron is most likely from either trauma or infection. I have never seen something like this due to parasites. You should really try to find a local veterinarian to examine him as he likely needs more in depth treatment than what you can provide at home with over the counter remedies. You may need to travel towards Green Bay in order to find a reptile veterinarian. I found a few in that area. My 4 yr old border collie had diarrhoea for three days, so I took her to the vet and it was resolved overnight with chicken and rice diet and pro kolin. At the same appointment we did bloods and unfortunately her kidney enzymes were very high. Her bloods were retested twice more over a four day period and the enzymes came down within range. An ultrasound to check kidneys was normal and no cultures found in urine. Could the bad blood tests been due to dehydration?

I'm sorry that your pup had diarrhea but I'm glad it resolved! Yes dehydration can cause abnormal kidney values. BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and creatinine can both be high in dogs who are dehydrated from non-kidney related illnesses, such as diarrhea (and vomiting). It's a good sign that her bloodwork is now normal. I hope this helps!

Cleaning the shell with an old toothbrush, and then applying betadine antiseptic (available at your local pharmacy) and then letting your turtle’s shell dry for a period of time…and the reapplying daily for several weeks is a standard treatment. Painted turtles are semi aquatic and should have an area of dry land in their enclosure where they can bask. Best wishes!
