Where did you go attend college (undergrad)? Where did you attend vet school? Cost/Length of vet school? Do you believe a major in biology or a major in animal science would be more beneficial to have to get into vet school?

I attended Purdue University for my undergrad education, and Massey University in New Zealand for vet school. Massey is AVMA accredited, so it's the same as going to a vet school in the US, but I got to live in an amazing country. I loved it so much, I stayed. Vet school in New Zealand is 4.5 years, and it's about the same cost as out of state tuition to vet school. I believe it's around $50k per year now. The most important thing to get into vet school is having good grades and all the pre-requisites. I majored in psychology with a minor in pre-veterinary medicine (to get my pre-requisites), and I got into vet school. I hope this helps!

Hi!! I'm doing a cost of living project for school, and I'm wanting to be a veterinarian when I'm older. For my project I have to pretend I am 23 and out of college. I will hopefully get accepted into vet school, so I will be pretending I am in Vet school. I would need a job while in school, so I was wondering if there are any jobs- either part-time or full-time ( I imagine full-time would be hard)- that veterinary offices offer to students?

Many vet clinics hire high school or college-aged students to help clean kennels and care for the animals in the clinic. Many vet clinics also offer boarding services, and hire school-aged kennel staff. Some clinics may hire college aged students as technician assistants, to help with restraint or exam room cleaning. For the purposes of your project, you could use any of these positions. If you're actively looking for such positions, I recommend creating a cover letter and resume, and reaching out to the vet clinics in your area to express your interest. Good luck! Hi and thanks for your request. The salary and the promotion steps would vary a lot depending on the type of work you are doing (clinical versus public health vs research). The passion for biology and animals and medicine gave me inspiration for choosing this profession. Personal hardest animals are horses. It is quite easy to get a job but that would depend were you work and what type of job you want to do. Passion for animals and learning and perseverance are important in this profession and they are what you have to keep in mind (unwritten rules). I have learned that failure is an important part of this profession and has to be taken with a positive attitude.

As a student and currently as a vet, how fascinated and interested are you in biology and science as a whole? I enjoy math, history and many aspects of both chemistry and biology. I'm extremely worried that my interests don't align with those needed to be a vet. In university and vet school, did you find the workload as enjoyable or just something that had to be done to work as your desired career? Do you really enjoy memorizing different medicines, body parts..etc?

So I actually have a major in psychology with a minor in veterinary medicine. I really liked science and biochemistry, hated math and physics with a passion. They were my nemesis. Your interests do not have to align 100% to be a vet, just have the drive and concentration to learn and study. I did not enjoy pathology in vet school. It was my least favorite. Oh that and cattle!

Hello, I'd recommend an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, or animal science. However, you can complete any degree as long as you have the core pre-requisites for the schools you want to apply to. It takes 3 years to complete enough courses to apply to veterinary school. Vet school takes 4 years. I'd recommend reading more about the profession and scheduling some volunteer time with your local animal shelters and veterinarians. It can be a harsh career field. Thank you for submitting your question regarding veterinary school! The application process was similar to most applications. I used college professors, a local veterinarian with whom I worked and a personal friend for my recommendation letters. To help make my application stand out, I had over the minimum level of experience hours (1000hrs) and I took graduate level microbiolgy courses while still an undergraduate. I also had hours in a wide variety of areas of vet med (small animal, large animal, equine and laboratory animal) to make my application stronger. I received a letter that invited me to interview and it wasn't until after that, that I was actually accepted into school. I honestly do not remember how much time passed between my interview and acceptance letter. I was confident I would be accepted and I believe this helped me during the interview. Good luck!!
