It could happen quickly if it causes a problem in the esophagus, or it could take a few days to become lodged in the intestines. There are reports out there of foreign objects that have stayed in the stomach for months. I think your best bet would be to see a veterinarian who can perform an x-ray and determine whether or not the nail was eaten and what should be done next. Sometimes simply monitoring the stool for a few days until the nail is recovered would be recommended.
