My dog started coughing a lot yesterday at the dog park and had two diarrhea episodes. This morning I woke up to him throwing up what looks like mucous or spit. Last week, I had an exterminator place rat poison around my apartment. He put it in places where my dog couldn’t get it like behind appliances but I am concerned that he somehow got to this. I keep him in a crate when I’m not home so I’m not sure how he would have gotten to the poison. The poison is the blood thinning type.

If there is a concern that Bear may somehow gotten rat poisoning, I recommend to have him examined quickly. He will need some blood testing and a physical exam. Coughing and diarrhea could be due to many things including an infection and parasites (though more sinister causes could also be present). These two symptoms could be related or unrelated. If the diarrhea continues beyond 24 hours, if the coughing continues beyond 48 hours or if either seems to be getting worse, he should be examined by the veterinarian. Avoid any strenuous activity to allow him to rest. You may also feed him a bland diet or boiled white meat chicken and boiled white rice for 24 hours. I hope this helps and have Bear examined if needed.
