My dog is limping on his front right leg. It is painful for him at his knee (only this area) as when I press gently on it, he curls his lips and bites. He can still put pressure on the leg, but you can see it brings him discomfort. I have inspected the area for cuts and see none that I am currently aware of. What could this be? How serious is it? Should I bring him to the emergency vet ASAP? (It is currently midnight where I live). What can I currently do to ease his pain?

Poor Cotton. Rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing, In the morning take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. It could be he has a broken bone, or may have torn or strained a ligament or muscle.
