My shih tzu is eight years old and has not had any previous health problems. I have been taking him on more walks recently because of the stay-home policy. I just noticed he won't jump on the couch or stand on his hind legs, though he normally can just fine. I tried to help him up because I thought he was just tired, but he yelped. He is NOT crying, limping, or panting. There does not appear to be anything wrong unless he's jumping. What could be causing this?

By your description, he may have hip, knee or low back pain. You will need to have him physically examined by your veterinarian to definitively diagnose the underlying cause This may require x-rays. Given current events, you may need to drop him off at the clinic, then wait for your veterinarian to call you to discuss exam findings and treatment options. Pain medication can be dispensed if indicated. Do not medicate him without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic or are easily overdosed.
