Biography

I grew up in Germany and studied Veterinary Medicine at The Veterinary University in Hannover, Germany (Tieraerztliche Hochschule). I graduated with a Veterinary degree in 1997 and worked in Ireland as a mixed practice veterinarian for 8 years. My career as a vet has also brought me to many corners of Europe (Austria, the UK, Germany, Switzerland) and to India where I do continuing education lectures for small animal veterinarians, do animal welfare and locum work and often have the opportunity to be part in wildlife conservation projects. I emigrated to the US in 2005, became a US citizen, and have since been working as a veterinarian for small and large animals and in emergency and critical care, licensed in New Mexico and Colorado. During the past 3 years I have thoroughly enjoyed answering veterinary questions online as well as doing consulting work. My secret love are cows, sheep and goats, so do not hesitate to ask if you have a problem with your livestock. I breed Icelandic Horses on my ranch in southern Colorado and am also the slave of 4 cats and 18 chickens.

His blood work came ok and normal and vet not able to diagnose he is also blinking his eyes if we bring some object near to his left eye but I don’t know what this is exactly in his left eye as shown in attach photo I am worried because when I read about this on Internet it’s written this is cancer so may I know the survival rate with this disease ? Note he has this thing in his eye since childhood in his left eyes May I know lifespan with this cancer

If your dog has had this from birth and if it has not grown, then it is likely not cancer. The only way to find out whether this is a malignant ocular melanoma is to consult with a veterinary eye specialist. This could be a benign ocular melanocytoma, or just melanistic spot in the anterior eye. But if it has been growing , it very well could be malignant. Cure of the malignant kind would be enucleation (taking the eye out) and hope it has not spread to surrounding tissue. However such tumors rarely metastasize

Dog developed lump on hip that was light pink and hairless, a few months have gone buy and it has gotten a little bigger on the outside but a good size bigger underneath the skin. Doesn’t seem to bother her

This looks like a tumor. You need to make an appointment with your veterinarian to have this mass examined and preferably have a Fine Needle Aspirate done to send to a laboratory or have it removed right away if possible, in case it is a malignant growth. The FNA will help with diagnosing whether this is malignant or benign.

My dog just turned 1 last week. When will I need to change his food? I usually get puppy Nutro essential. Do I stick with the same brand or food?

You can stick with the same food until Toni is about 16 months old then slowly transition to food for adult dogs by replacing the old with the new bit by bit over a few days. You can stick with the same brand, but the type for adult dogs.

I just noticed today that my dogs gums appear to be paler than they normally are. Today they are like a pale pink. He is acting completely normal. Eating and drinking great. He is on tylosin powder.

Pale pink gums are still normal for a dog. Since you say that Bentley is acting normal, eating and drinking, I would not worry. Check his gums once a day every day for the next few days. Should the gums turn pale or white, you will need to call your vet for an appointment.

I really need help answering a question for my course. I absolutely cannot find it anywhere. If possible could someone help me get the right answer and explain? Question: Under which of the following conditions is intraosseous administration contraindicated? Answers are: A. Flea-infested dog B. Cat with diabetes C. Rabbit with urinary tract disease D. Dog with osteomyelitis

I am not going to answer this question for you but will try to help you find the answer your self. 1) Figure out what intra-osseous means 2) what is usually administered intra-osseously? 3) Why would you administer fluids or medication intra-osseously? 4) What does contraindicated mean? 5) Look at the diseases in the question. The administration can only be successful in functional tissue/ bone. Answering these five questions will make it easy for you to find the solution.
