General description

Dimenhydrinate is an anti-histamine/anti-emetic used to prevent motion sickness in dogs. Can be used in cats, but better choices are available. Veterinary use is extra-label.

Used to decrease motion sickness in dogs

How it works

Dimenhydrinate blocks the stimulation of the vestibular system in the brain which helps to reduce the clinical signs associated with motion sickness.

Dosage

**Dogs and Cats**: 4 – 8 milligrams per kilogram of body weight by mouth every 8 hours.

Oral Tablets: 50 mg (regular & chewable)

Tablets: stored at room temperature protected from moisture and light.

What results can I expect?

Resolution of vomiting and motion sickness.

Missed Dosage

If a dose is missed, continue with the next dosage at the scheduled time.

Overdose / acute toxicity

May see excitement or seizures, lethargy, or coma, respiratory depression, or death with overdose.

May include: * Sedation * Dry mouth * Urinary retention * Decreased appetite * Vomiting * Diarrhea

Contraindications

Avoid use in pets with: * Known hypersensitivity * Angle closure glaucoma * Prostatic hypertrophy * Stomach or intestinal obstruction, * Urinary obstruction * COPD * Hyperthyroidism * Seizures * High blood pressure

Drug interactions

Consult your veterinarian before using dimenhydrinate with any other medications, even vitamins and supplements. The following drugs may interact with dimenhydrinate: * Anticholinergic drugs (including tricyclic antidepressants) * CNS depressant drugs

Precaution

Use with caution in working animals, as sedation may interfere with job performance.
