Although certain vegetation may be safe in moderation, always consult your vet before introducing any new food to your pet’s diet. Feed foods in moderation (treats should make up less than 10% of their daily caloric intake) and be on the lookout for signs of discomfort, which vary by species but may include:

  • Excess gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Itchiness
  • Drooling
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Inflammation
  • Not eating

Also keep in mind that plants may be toxic until ripe and some plant parts are toxic to some species. Never feed your pet pits, seeds, rinds, leaves or stems. If you notice any of these ssigns or any concerning changes of behavior in your pet, call the Pet Poison Helpline 855-764-7661 and take your pet to an emergency veterinarian.
