It can be a serious situation when your pet has an infection. By the time they start showing symptoms, your pet may be very ill and need immediate care. Your vet may prescribe a potent antibiotic like Zeniquin to help fight the bacterial infection.

What is Zeniquin?

Zeniquin is a brand name for the medication marbofloxacin. Other brands that contain marbofloxacin include Aurizon, Aristos, Forcyl, Kelacyl, Marbocyl and Boflox.

It is in the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics and may be used on- or off-label for your pet. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of marbofloxacin for dogs and cats when treating susceptible microorganisms. It is also sometimes prescribed off-label for other species of pets.

It is important to only use marbofloxacin or Zeniquin for the pet it was prescribed for. You should never attempt to give other pets antibiotics or any other prescription medication that wasn’t prescribed for them unless instructed by a vet. The dosage is often prescribed by weight and ailment, so giving another pet the medication without being examined by a professional can cause serious side effects.

What is marbofloxacin used for?

Marbofloxacin is used to treat severe or stubborn bacterial infections. Infections of major organs, like the bladder, skin or kidneys, are often treated with this strong broad-spectrum antibiotic—which means it works against many types of bacteria. It may also be prescribed to treat bacterial infections in the prostate or other parts of the body. Zeniquin for cats and dogs may also be used if the bacteria have become resistant to other antibiotics, but it doesn’t work well against anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that grow best in the absence of oxygen).

What are the side effects of Zeniquin for dogs and cats?

Marbofloxacin's side effects most commonly include stomach upset. You may notice your pet losing interest in food. It may also result in vomiting and diarrhea. You should seek veterinary assistance if your pet becomes feverish, appears clumsy, has trouble walking, stops eating completely, develops rashes, is having trouble breathing or if any Zeniquin side effects are severe.

Marbofloxacin should not be given to young animals because it can cause damage to joints that are still growing. It should be used with caution in pets with diseases affecting their central nervous systems as seizures have been reported. Marbofloxacin can also adversely affect tendons, so make sure your veterinarian knows if your dog or cat has a history of problems with their tendons.

If high doses of marbofloxacin for cats are needed, eye health and eyesight can be affected in sensitive cats. Cats who are elderly or who have had liver or kidney disease may be at higher risk.

Marbofloxacin for cats and dogs can interact with many different types of medications, so you should inform your vet of all the medications your pet is currently taking, including over-the-counter medications like antacids or vitamin supplements.

Is Zeniquin a steroid?

No. Steroids are synthetic hormones that help reduce symptoms of illness. Zeniquin is one of many different cat antibiotics and dog antibiotics that help destroy the bacteria that is attacking the body.

Can humans take marbofloxacin?

No. Humans should never take any medication that is prescribed for their pet. All medications—for humans and pets—should be kept in a place that is inaccessible to children or animals. You should also always wash thoroughly after dispensing medication or wear gloves and dispose of them immediately after use.

Can I crush marbofloxacin?

Marbofloxacin dosages for dogs and cats come in tablet or liquid form. There is marbofloxacin 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg. Marbofloxacin can be crushed, but it is difficult to do so. Before crushing medication, it is important to always ask your vet or pharmacist. Crushing some medications could produce negative reactions or harm your pet.

How do I store marbofloxacin?

This medication should be kept in its original container from your vet or pharmacy and should be stored at room temperature, as long as the room does not exceed 86°F. In its liquid form, it needs to be refrigerated unless otherwise specified.

Is there anything I should avoid giving my pet when they’re taking Zeniquin?

Yes. Many pet parents usecheese to coax their pets to take their medications—however, dairy products of any kind should not be given while your pet is taking Zeniquin. You also need to avoid giving vitamins or foods that contain a lot of aluminum, magnesium, calcium or iron. Consult your vet if you have any questions or concerns.

How long can my dog take marbofloxacin?

Marbofloxacin should be given to your pet exactly as directed. Continue giving your pet this medication as directed, even if it appears your pet is getting better, unless told otherwise by your vet.
