Getting a veterinary medical degree in the United States requires an additional four years of education after college. The cost of vet school varies depending on a variety of factors including whether you are considered an "in-state" student, whether the school is public or private, etc. But on average, for most students, vet school ends up costing an average of $150,000 - 200,000 total. This would be in addition to whatever costs are accrued in college, prior to applying to vet school.

Typically dental cleanings are a day surgery, meaning the animal comes in during the morning and goes home later that afternoon, but if there is a concern about the animal's health during or after surgery, they can stay the night. It may just be an extra precaution by your vet. I would speak with your vet about why they want her to stay the night. I hope this helps.

Hi, I have a cat named Bella who is 9. I just found open wounds on her hind area closer to her vagina, I cleaned them up and she’s been acting really normal, other than pooping outside the litter for the past week. She is fixed and is timid with some slight aggression, as shes always has been. I don’t know what is wrong and don’t have the finances for the vet right now, what do I do?

Without a photo, it would be hard to say exactly what is going on. I would continue to keep the area clean and dry and see if it starts to heal on its own, and also use an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Bella to keep her from licking and chewing (this will help prevent infection) - your local pet store should carry these. If the area begins to change shape or size, doesn't heal, is hot to the touch or painful, or oozes debris, these are all signs of an infection that do need to be seen in person ASAP. Possible blood in pet stool? My small dog got into some toilet paper recently. We are currently not in the financial position to take her into the vet but in the case of an emergency I will find a way. She got into the tp almost a week ago and I've been watching her potties closely since then. Typically they are normal but recently she's had one other concerning me besides this one. There was also some white foam vomit? She's active and eating and drinking normally. Should I run her in?

Toilet paper should pass, but may cause some digestive upset or cause blockage of the bowels if enough was eaten. That said, blood from the stomach is usually dark red or black, and blood from the rectum/anus is a brighter red color. If Brie has eaten any new treats or foods, that can also affect stool color. If the red stool and vomit only occurred once after eating the toilet paper, I would continue to monitor Brie for any other signs of a blockage, These include continued vomiting and diarrhea, blood in either still, hunched or tender abdomen, bloated abdomen, not wanting to eat or drink, or attempting to vomit or defecate without success, as these are all signs of a medical emergency. You may also want to offer a bland diet for a few days to help with any minor digestive upset. Boiled chicken and rice is an easy option on the stomach. If you suspect a blockage, the symptoms continue, or Brie isn't improving, vet care ASAP is best.

Dear friends; my 15 y.o. cat is chronic renal. she takes 125 ml serum w/lactate every 48 hs. No appetite: I must feed her Recovery & AD 120 ml/day via a seringe in the mouth. The only food she will eat spontaneouly is ND tuna or tuna&salmon. I live in Brazil, these cans are imported, very expensive. The vet told not to feed commercial canned tuna for its sodium content. Question: what if I buy natural tuna or salmon at the fishmonger and give her? Thank you VERY much!

The challenge with chronic kidney disease is that it's often necessary to limit protein intake, but they can be a bit nauseous if their kidney values (BUN and creatinine) are high. Some cats also require supplements of potassium to help keep their electrolytes under control. I don't know specifically what you have available in Brazil with respect to prescription diets, but I usually prescribe either Hill's Science Diet k/d, Purina NF, or Royal Canin renal support. I would start by asking your vet if you could try one of those diets for Sophia - possibly mixed with the A/D to help make it more palatable to her. Ultimately, when it comes to managing cats with kidney disease, it's more important to get them to eat something - anything - over nothing. If you try all of the renal diets and Sophia rejects them all, I would next try any other canned commercial cat food. If she also rejects those, you'll just have to give in and go with the higher protein fish option, such as cooked fresh tuna or salmon. It's not ideal, but what in life is? I hope that everything goes well for Sophia!

My Boston terrier was fine yesterday but now he yelps when moving a certain way or when jumping up. He can't get comfy and he will eat but not drink like usual. He had a bowl movement earlier today. What could it be? Vets are so expensive here. Not sure what to do.

Thank younfor submitting your question regarding Oochie. I am worried with the symptoms that you have described. I do recommend that he sees a veterinarian. Small breed dogs are prone to back pain. This can be very painful and cause a dog to yelp, not want to move, be reluctant to do stairs or jump and be less likely to eat. The veterinarian will examine him to determine if this is the case or if there is another issue. In the meantime, carry him if possible and bring food and water to him. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Hello, My husky returned from boarding with pink swelling on one of her paw pads and I'm not sure what to do. I'd like to avoid an expensive vet trip is possible. See attached for pictures - thanks!

It does look swollen and irritated. You could soak her paw in a warm Epsom salt solution for 5 minutes for a few days and see if that helps. If not, she needs to be examined and treated by a vet. She may need an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory .
