General description

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that has a broad spectrum of activity against bacteria. Ciprofloxacin is used frequently in veterinary medicine to treat a wide variety of respiratory, urogenital and skin infections.

Skin infections, pneumonia and soft tissue infections

How it works

Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum bactericidal antibiotic. It is able to inhibit replication of many bacterial species.

Dosage

**Dogs**: 20-25 milligrams per kilogram of body weight by mouth every 24 hours, 10-15 milligrams per kilogram of body weight intravenously every 24 hours **Cats**: 20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight by mouth every 24 hours, 10 milligrams per kilogram of body intravenously every 24 hours.

Forms

Ciprofloxacin tablets for oral use available in 100, 250, 500 and 750 milligram sizes. Ciprofloxacin for intravenous use contain 2 milligrams of Ciprofloxacin per milliliter.

Storage information & handling

Tablets: Keep dry and in a dark, cool place. Injectable: Protect from direct sunlight. Maintain at room temperature.

What results can I expect?

Assuming that the infection being treated is susceptible to Ciprofloxacin, resolution of the infection should occur during the treatment period.

Missed Dosage

If a dose is missed, continue with the next dosage at the scheduled time.

Overdose / acute toxicity

Overdosage is rare, and expected symptoms are exacerbation of adverse effects risk. Consult your veterinarian if your pet has been exposed to an overdose.

Side effects

May include: * Lack of appetite * Vomiting * Central nervous system (CNS) disorders, such as epilepsy or dizziness could potentially occur * May cause problems in the development of bones/joints of young growing animals, including large breeds of dogs under 24 months * Dehydration may increase the risk of crystals developing in the urine

Contraindications

Do not use in: * Pets with previous sensitivity. Discuss any previous reactions your pet has had to antibiotics with your veterinarian * Compromised patients * Farm animals

Drug interactions

Do not use with theophylline. Do not use with products containing aluminum, calcium or iron as it will limit absorption.

Precaution

Do not use in farm animals. Do not use in young animals due to the potential for cartilage damage.
