Kaolin/pectin is used to treat mild diarrhea in dogs and cats. It may cause constipation at high doses. If the vomiting and/or diarrhea persists for more than 48 hours; the pet has a fever, is depressed or shows abdominal pain; or the pet does not continue to be active and alert, contact your veterinarian.
Mild cases of diarrhea in dogs and cats
Kaolin/pectin works by binding some toxins in the gastrointestinal tract that cause diarrhea.
Tablets should be stored in the container with the lid.
If a dose is missed, continue with the next dosage at the scheduled time.
May see constipation with overdose.
May inhibit the absorption of lincomycin and digoxin. Give kaolin/pectin at least 2 hours before or 3-4 hours after other medications.
Shake well before use. Some formulations of Kaopectate includes bismuth salicylate as an ingredient. This should not be used in cats unless directed by your veterinarian. Dogs that may have an allergy to aspirin, or are taking aspirin, steroids, or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Rimadyl, EtoGesic or Galliprant should not be given the formulation with bismuth salicylate unless directed by a veterinarian.
