General description

Penicillin G is an antibiotic used in dogs, cats and other pets. Certain species, including snakes, birds, turtles, guinea pigs and chinchillas are reported to be sensitive to procaine penicillin. While many medications are often administered for ‘off-label’ or 'extra-label' use in veterinary medicine, it is important to know that off- or extra- label use of a medication can only be done by a veterinarian when there are no other more appropriate medications for a particular pet's circumstances. Your veterinarian must also know all vitamins, supplements, medications etc. your pet is taking to help avoid complications. You must also be sure to follow all instructions provided by your vet carefully and consult your veterinarian with any questions or concerns if they arise.

Uses

Penicillin G is generally used for urinary tract infections, skin infections and respiratory infections.

How it works

Penicillin G disrupts the cell wall of certain bacteria which causes bacterial death.

Dosage

  • Dogs and Cats: 20,000-40,000 units per kilogram of body weight given subcutaneously or intramuscularly every 6-8 hours.

See label for instructions specific to each product. Injectable formulations should be kept refrigerated. Some products are only good for 7 days after opening. Check the drug label for specific handling and storage instructions.

Side effects can be more severe with overdose.
