Typically, female dogs can be bred on days 9-14 after the start of their cycle. Since it can be very difficult to know the very first day of the cycle, I would recommend progesterone testing with a vet to know the appropriate timing. Alternatively, you can allow the male to breed her when he is ready, since they often know the perfect time.

Check out this article on it: https://humanepro.org/magazine/articles/deconstructing-spayneuter-debate Not spaying her can cause a pseudopregnancy reoccurrence, but it doesn't increase her risk of mammary tumors. That's already going to be 25% because she's had more than two heats. Keep in mind, 50% of mammary tumors in dogs are malignant. She is eight years old, so she is already at a higher risk of developing cancer simply because she is an older dog. She is also at risk of a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. The treatment for a pyometra is spaying the dog, which is an emergency during a pyometra and can cost many thousands of dollars. In all honesty, it's best to spay her. It will keep her from developing a pyometra as well as a pseudopregnancy, and it will keep her from getting pregnant if she accidentally mates. Dogs over the age of six should never have puppies. In my opinion, it's best for her to health to get spayed asap. I hope this helps!

My young female started her heat about 22 days ago, she was flagging about 9 days ago. By this past weekend, the males were eating again and her vulva was shrinking back down, no more discharge and no more flagging. She was even starting to snap at them. Yesterday my husband was supposed to be watching the dogs and left them to use the restroom, he came out and my older intact male was tied with her briefly. What are the chances of pregnancy? This was the ONLY tie that occurred.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question. There is a chance of pregnancy, but the best time for a dog is get is pregnant is between day 9-11 of their cycle. Given it's been 22 days, it makes it less likely, but there is still a chance. I'd wait 30 days, then take her into the vet to get blood drawn to check for the hormone relaxin, which occurs when a dog is pregnant. I hope this helps.

My cat's fur started to separate. Sometimes on the head/neck it forms like mono tufts, that come off as a group of fine soft undercoat fur. What could it be? She is 13yrs old, neutered Scottish Fold. Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. From the photo there does not appear to be any bald spots, however, it is not a very close up view. Honestly, unless there are bald spots and/or she is scratching the area I would not be too concerned. If the problem persists though (like for a few months) then you should take her to your vet for an exam. Some reasons there could be changes in the hair coat: 1. Diet - the special diet she is eating may be causing some nutrient imbalance. You should talk to your vet about putting her on a supplement for her coat (like fish oils) as this may help. 2. Skin Allergies - even if she has never had any symptoms of allergies before, they can develop over time. If this was the case though, I would expect hair loss and/or scratching, redness of the skin, etc. If you are not seeing any of that then this is not as likely to be the problem. 3. Fleas - again, I would expect hair loss and scratching. If you are not noticing that, then this is also not very likely to be the problem. 4. Stress - even if you don't think your cat is stressed, she could be. Try to see if you could think of anything that could be causing stress like visiting family, stray cats hanging around outside, you got a new pet, new furniture, etc.... 5. Thyroid disease- either a low or high thyroid can cause problems with the hair coat. Your vet can do a blood test to check for this. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102F, and if a pregnant dog's temperature drops below 100F, that's typically a sign of active labor. She may appear restless and anxious, and you could see panting, pacing, and a refusal of food. The loss of the mucus plug can occur anywhere from a few hours to four to five days before giving birth. The best way to know for sure is to have her seen by a vet. I'm concerned that she's been having these signs for a week, I would take her into a vet immediately to get checked out. My aunt left on a cruise yesterday. I am watching her female 8 month old dog (she is large) a few weeks ago I noticed little bumps on her inside ear area, asked about it but she said it was garden thorns? I also noticed some little marks on her undercarriage. Today was my first full day watching her letting her out etc. and i noticed the undercarriage spots look worse. Hello. This looks pretty typical for an allergic dermatitis that has lead to a skin infection. Ideally, this should be addressed by your veterinarian. They can discuss possible causes (food allergy, contact allergy, flea allergy, etc) and prescribe medications which may include antibiotics for the raised lesions and allergy therapies.

Ellis is a black lab, bred for guide dog service, but didn’t graduate. He is now 14. He’s a happy pup, but has been in decline. Just this year he decided he no longer wants to go for walks. Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. There are MANY different things that can be done to help him get around better - namely medications that your vet can prescribe. I think it would be the least you can do to help him. Remember, just because a dog is not crying or complaining doesn't mean he is not in pain. Animals do not manifest pain the same way we do. They just carry on and do the best they can like they would do in the wild. Please take him to a vet for an exam and to get him started on some NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication). Don't let him continue to be in pain. You will be surprised at how much the medications help.
