Hello, Our fish got stuck under an aquarium cave and we found him this morning with damaged fins. He still seems to be breathing but cannot swim with the fin damage. Is this a situation where his fins with regrow and survive? If yes, how can we assist him in survival/regrowth?

This presentation could be compatible with fin rot, which is a bacterial or fungal infection. It is unlikely that the primary cause is traumatic, unless Tank is itchy (that could be compatible with a bacterial infection anyway) and he is scratching himself constantly. The approach must be logic anyway starting from water quality check and treating with some antibiotics. Begin by submitting a water sample for quality testing. Most pet stores will do this for free or a nominal fee. If water quality is good and there are no major imbalances, water should be treated with antibiotics. Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. There is no way for me to tell you if Iggy's "snoring" is a problem or not. I suggest you take a video of him breathing (making the noise) to show to your vet. After seeing that video and doing an examination on him they can give you more information as to whether or not this is a problem. All I can say without seeing him is that if this is a constant sound when he breathes all the time, he may have a polyp or a tumor in his nasal passages, sinus(es), nasopharynx, pharynx, larynx or the trachea. This noise is definitely something that needs to be addressed. There have been some studies evaluating its toxic effects, mainly when used as a gel substrate in eye medications in animals and this is what I was able to find regarding this: Use: Carbomer-based gels significantly extend contact of solutes or suspended solids with the corneal surface Overdosage: Doses up to 1 g/kg PO in dogs x 6 mo resulted in no observable clinical effects and no pathological lesion No toxic effects expected; should signs develop, treatment should be symptomatic Systemic toxicosis not expected due to poor bioavailability So therefore, there are no concerns here when this compound is ingested in animals (dogs or cats). This is typically the case when dealing with over the counter supplements or dental products in general. If toxicity concerns were there, a product would likely require a prescirption and would not be available as an over the counter. Kidney disease isn't contagious, so no he couldn't have gotten it from your other cat. That being said, it's clear something is wrong with Obi, and it could be kidney disease but it could also be diabetes, both of which are common in older cats. This definitely needs to be checked out by a vet quite soon, and I'd book an appointment with his vet for this week for a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis. Once the cause of his symptoms have been diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment option with you. I hope this helps.

Hello. My door was open with a screen net and a raccoon came right up to the door making contact with my cat. Face to face. Is there a way for her to catch anything like that like rabies? Or does a cat have to get bitten for that? I immediately ran up and closed the door. The raccoon was coming to eat the bird seeds. Is there anything to worry about here?

So there is very low risk of rabies transmission based on what you have described as making ocntact through a screen net. It isn't impossible because rabies is found in the saliva, just very unlikely in this scenario. Just keep an eye on your pet Kate for the next 7 days for any abnormal behavior (i.e. excessive vocalization, irrational behaivor, aggressive behavior, and if she is not up to date on her rabies vaccination, I would highly recommend getting her vaccinated asap. Hello! I’m inquiring about my 10 year old rabbit, Brownie. He has been diagnosed with synovial cell sarcoma or osteosarcoma of his left knee. There has been quite a progression of multiple fractures causing him pain in the knee. Our vet gave us two options: amputation of the leg to ease pain or continuing on and opting for palliative care with pain meds until end of life. How will his quality of life be post-surgery since he’s old? Is it worth going through with if he is a senior bunny?

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Brownie. I'm so very sorry he has cancer. Domestic rabbits typically live between 8-12 years, so he is definitely a senior rabbit. The problem with osteosarcoma is that there is a high risk of metastatis (spreading) to other parts of the body, typically the lungs. I'm not sure if you have had x-rays done of his lungs, but there may be a chance it's already spread. There is a possibility that the spread may not show up on x-rays just yet as the cancer cells are too small to detect at the moment. I'm also not sure about his anesthetic risking, meaning that giving him anesthesia could be very risky at his age depending on his health. There is a lot to consider here, and I'm not sure how much life he would have left after surgery. Sometimes yes the surgery can be worth going through even in a senior animal, but there are other questions that need to be answered like if the cancer has spread and his anesthetic risk. I would discuss these questions with your vet, which will help you make your decision. Other things to consider is that it will take a number of weeks for him to recover from surgery, and that life expectancy after surgery is not very long, usually a couple of months. I would take that into consideration as well when making your decision. I can't tell you which way to go, but I do hope I've helped you with some things to consider. Again, I'm very sorry.

Hello, I am devastated. My beautiful tabby cat, "Honey" died on her own at 1 a.m. Sunday. She had lung cancer. She was bloated with fluid and could not breathe. She was on her side with eyes staring as if in shock. A short time later she was dead. "Lap of Love" was coming to put her to sleep Monday. I feel so bad. I loved her so much. I will never forgive myself. Do you think she suffered or did the coma protect her and prepare her for death? Thank you. Linda
